Avon IN Fire Water Damage

If you have suffered fire or water damage to your home, your first call should be to a local, professional fire and water damage restoration company.  They are the best equipped to handle the damage to your home or business, and can usually have a technician out to assess your damage within a few hours.

In the meantime, there are some steps you can take yourself to help improve the situation.

If you have water damage:

Open all windows and doors to get as much air circulating as possible.

Remove as much excess water as possible by mopping, or if you have a shop-vac, suction it.

Remove all wet and damaged furniture and appliances to be treated elsewhere.

Remove all rugs or other floor coverings.  These will need to be dried, cleaned, and disinfected.

Remove all loose items, such as books, artwork, clothing, etc, and let them dry.

If the damage occurs during a cool season, turn the heat on.  Conversely, if it occurs during summer, turn up the air conditioner.

Above all, begin treatment for water damage as soon as possible, as damage from the water and mold growth can begin within a few hours.

In the event of fire damage:

Blow off or brush vacuum soot particles from surfaces (upholstery, drapes, carpet)

Throw out all open food containers.  Soot does nothing for food at all.

Clothing will probably need professional treatment to remove smoke odor.  A run through the washer won’t do it.

Change the air filter on your furnace if yours is of the forced hot air variety.

Tape cheesecloth over the intake and outlet air registers to catch any soot that may be floating in the air.  This works better if the cloth is damp.
