Given the choice between fire or water ravaging your home, I would suggest that fire is the preferred option.  Repairing damage done by fire is fairly straightforward, but with water damage there are many issues and aspects you must consider and cover before you can pronounce your repair work complete.

Water damage may be as simple as a leaky faucet or pipe, or maybe a broken window seal, or it may be as complex as a backed up sewer system or flash flooding caused by torrential rains.

When considering how to best repair water damage, you should take into account the size of the area affected, the amount of excess water involved, and what kind of water you are dealing with.  Typically, small spills with clean water are fairly easy fixes, whereas six inches of raw sewage in your living room will be a very involved process, in all likelihood requiring the services of a professional.

Mattresses and carpet padding that have been in contact with flood waters should be thrown out.  Carpet may be salvaged if it has been wet for less than 48 hours, and if there are no signs of mold propagation.  Carpets will need to be dried, cleaned, disinfected, sanitized, and then dried a second time.    I’ll leave the choice of whether this involved process is preferable to just replacing the carpet up to you.
